Isleta means "Little Island" in Spanish, but Isleta Pueblo is hardly little having 21,002 acres and a population over 3,000. Isleta has had a troubled history. When the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 began, many members fled to Hopi settlements in Arizona. After the rebellion was over, many returned bring Hopi-mates and half-Hopi children.
