The North Central Regional Transit District on Christmas Eve will begin sending buses up and down the road to the Santa Fe ski resort, Ski Santa Fe, seven times daily until New Year’s Day.
Normally, the district’s Blue Buses drive to the Santa Fe ski area three times a day during the week, beginning from the South Capitol Rail Runner Station. But on the holiday schedule, buses will leave the station at 8, 9, 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and at 1:15, 3:30 and 3:45 p.m. The buses stop at the Fort Marcy Recreation Complex and Hyde State Park before turning around at the ski area.
The fare is $5 each way, and riders must provide exact amount.
The transit district began running buses up Hyde Park Road in late September as part of an eight-month trial period. In the first week, it had 38 riders. But by Week 9, when the ski lifts began running, 69 people a week were riding the new route, and that number climbed to 158 in Week 12, with a day left to go.
“Numbers are running about 300 percent over what they had been” in the first week, he said.
To date, the transit district has spent more than $160,000 on the route.
Randy Randall, executive director of Tourism Santa Fe, the city of Santa Fe’s tourism bureau, said Ski Santa Fe is one of the more underestimated ski areas in the country. It’s not as large as Taos, Vail or Aspen, he said, but this Santa Fe ski are has smaller crowds and cheaper tickets.
“And frankly, most ski towns have shuttles to take people to their ski areas, and I think Santa Fe should think of itself more as a ski town,” Randall said.
He said the transit district should measure the route’s initial success not by how many people ride the buses but by the consistency of its schedule.

CHILE 101: PREPARATION, HANDLING AND STORING NEW MEXICO CHILE
Chile – both Red and Green – are essential ingredients in traditional New Mexican cooking. Of course, one can buy already prepped and ready to go chile, but Santa Fe chefs know chile taste better when prepared in season and fresh. Doing it yourself not only is more economical, but it’s fun too! An experience of authentic New Mexico culture and history. Below is everything you need to know to become a “chile pro”. Go ahead, take your New Mexico cooking to the next level!
Perfect Chile Roasting 101:
ROASTING FRESH NEW MEXICO CHILES AT HOME
- It’s easy! Roast fresh New Mexico chile pods in an oven; on top of a gas stove; or on an outdoor grill!
- Begin with New Mexico grown green chiles- they are the most frequently roasted! About twenty minutes for oven roasting putting a single layer of green chile on baking sheet. Blister chile at 450° F (blackening skins in many spots) and turn as needed for uniformed scorching or until chiles collapse.
- If roasting just a few green pods, hold with tongs over flame of a gas burner for a few minutes. Turn to blacken all over, or use an asador (wire-mesh griddle).
- If using a gas or charcoal grill, place green chile on grate over hot fire, searing all sides- about ten minutes.
- Roast fresh red pods the same ways, but because of their higher moisture content, keep from blistering and blackening as fully as green. Judge their readiness by looking for loosening skin with deep brown shades.
STEAM AND PEEL FRESH NEW MEXICO CHILES
After roasting red or green chile, steam pods immediately to loosen skins.
- Place pods in a Ziploc plastic bag or covered bowl. Let sit five to ten minutes until cool enough to handle.
- Peeling quantities of chiles, require rubber gloves! Avoid capsaicin (substance that gives the pods heat) getting onto your hands- it doesn’t wash off easily and can irritate skin.
- Strip off the outer skin or peel. If tempted to run water over chiles to help in the process (some peel is bound to stick)- Don’t do it! As this will dilutes the flavor. Instead, rinse gloved hands under running water.
- Remove all stems and seeds unless plans include stuffing chiles. In this case, leave the stem and any seeds still attached to avoid weakening the pod.
GREEN CHILE SAUCE RECIPE: Servings: 4 cups
Green chile sauce is an essential ingredient in New Mexican recipes. Green chile sauce can be frozen- so feel free to be creative and smother any/all meats, eggs, pasta, etc with this highly popular accompaniment! This green chile sauce will be a welcomed treat packing a punch of flavor and spice to any dish. If planning ahead, remember this keeps for 3 days refrigerated otherwise it freezes well!
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- ½ to 1 medium onion, chopped fine
- 2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chopped roasted New Mexican green chile, fresh or thawed frozen
- 2 cups chicken or beef stock
- ½ teaspoon salt, or more to taste
- Warm the oil in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and sauté until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the flour and continue cooking for another 1 or 2 minutes.
- Mix in the chile. Immediately begin pouring in the stock, stirring as you go, then add the salt.
- Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to a low simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, until thickened but still very pourable. Use warm or refrigerate for later use.
RED CHILE SAUCE RECIPE:
Another staple in New Mexican cooking! Use red sauce in enchiladas, burritos, tamales, or smothered on top of basically anything. This sauce will keep up to 6 days refrigerated and freezes well.
Servings: 4 cups
- Toast dried whole chile pods in a heavy skillet over medium heat until they are warm and release their fragrance, 1 to 2 minutes per side.
- Remove the chiles from the skillet immediately. When cool enough to handle, break each chile pod into several pieces (wearing rubber or plastic gloves if your skin is sensitive), discarding the stem and seeds.
- Place half the chile pieces in a blender and pour in one-half of the water or stock. Puree until mostly smooth but with a few flecks of chile still visible in the liquid.
- Warm the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and sauté several minutes until the onion is limp.
- Pour in the blended chile mixture, then add oregano and salt.
- Puree the remaining chiles with the remaining water and pour it into the sauce in the pan. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for a total of 20 to 25 minutes.
- After about 15 minutes, taste the sauce and adjust seasonings. When ready, the sauce will be cooked down enough to coat a spoon thickly but still drop off of it easily. Use warm or refrigerate for later use.
- 8 ounces (about 20 to 25) dried whole red New Mexican chile pods, mild, medium, hot, or a combination
- 4 cups water or chicken stock (divided use)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, minced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 to 2 teaspoons crumbled dried Mexican oregano, or marjoram
- 1 teaspoon salt, or more to taste

First in Series: New Mexico True Historic USA travel experiences

Adobe bricks (mud bricks) are a long time New Mexico architectural building staple. Modern historic preservation efforts within Santa Fe’s historic district are to be commended for their preservation. New Mexico visitors travel with high expectations to see and experience ancient traditions of culture which adobe bricks encase and accurately preserve. Made of earth, traditional adobe bricks have a high clay content and straw mixture. If produced manually the earth mix is cast in open moulds onto the ground and left to be sun-dried, not kiln-fired. When used for construction they are laid up into a wall using an earth mortar. Before drying out, the finished walls are smoothed down and often a clay render applied as a surface coating.
Adobe brick building is an ancient technique common in the Americas and the Middle East. The oldest structural ruins made of earth date back to 8300 BC with some adobe buildings aged 800+ years still in use today! “Adobe” is a signature of Santa Fe New Mexico’s architecture and is beautifully preserved in many a historic building such as the De Vargas Street House (aka Oldest House in the USA). Built in 1200 CE, the original adobe home sits on the partial foundation of an ancient Indian Pueblo. Modern day use as a museum provides New Mexico visitors a viewing of this ancient art of adobe building. The De Vargas Street House has quiet a history and is a short stroll from Pueblo Bonito Inn- Santa Fe.
The Palace of the Governors (1610) is an adobe structure located on the north side of Santa Fe’s Plaza. The Palace of the Governors served as the seat of government for the state of New Mexico for centuries and is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States. The Palace originally served the Spanish colony of Nuevo Mexico, which at one time comprised present-day states of Texas, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Nevada,California, and New Mexico. After the Mexican War of Independence, the Mexican province of Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico was administered from the Palace of the Governors. When New Mexico was annexed as a U.S. territory the Palace became New Mexico’s first territorial capitol.*
“Adobe” is the Spanish name derived from the older Arabic “al-tob”, dating from the Moorish occupation of Spain. Adobe walls have a number of advantages and relatively few disadvantages. Adobe bricks are fireproof, durable and biodegradable! Adobe is a non-toxic building material and can provide sufficient thermal mass to ensure excellent thermal efficiency and low sound transmission levels through walls to create a general feeling of solidity and security. Due to the nature of clay and the drying process, adobe bricks exhibits good water resistance. It is important to provide weather protection to extend life to the adobe brick especially in exposed situations. Adobe can be cut relatively easily to provide for fittings or services like vigas, corbels, pass through, etc. Many people today find the pattern and texture of adobe walls very attractive as is the case at Pueblo Bonito bed and breakfast inn.

You might think late winter in Santa Fe lacks excitement for bird lovers. On the contrary; late Winter – early Spring birds seen in and around Santa Fe consist of colorful migrants and back yard birds. Considered “permanent range” for bluebirds like the Mountain Bluebird and Western bluebird, Santa Fe is a great place for these Northern New Mexico birds to stay put! They like fairly open habitat so you’ll spot bluebirds on the edges of town- a popular location is near El Dorado (south of downtown). Bluebirds group in winter months so if you spot them, they’ll be large numbers. Bluebirds work together to find steady sources of food (berries usually) and water (horse trough, heated bird bath, etc.)
Other spotting like that of the Grosbeaks have been seen in large flocks in and around Santa Fe this year. These yellow, white and black migratory bird’s movements are unpredictable but have been reported.
A ladder-backed woodpecker which exhibits rungs like that of a ladder (male has red on his head) have also been sited nearby and in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Local residents who supplement winter time bird feeding with sunflower seeds, nuts and suet help bring these lovely creatures to Santa Fe. However, birds are not dependent upon feeders. It’s only a fraction of their diet. In winter months, most bird’s food comes from natural sources like berries, old seeds (pinon, flowers, grasses) and larva.
Birdwatching is but one enjoyable outdoor activity enjoyed by late Winter – Spring New Mexico travelers. When is the best time to vacation in Santa Fe? However, my favorite time is between September and November. During these months, temps can be 80s, 70s, 60s and even the 50s as Thanksgiving nears. Hotel rates drop mid-October and mid to low seasonal rates begin in November, December, January and February. Skiing (downhill, cross country and snowboarding) starts the end of November, which is a real treat! One can argue that springtime in Santa Fe, New Mexico has similar climate temps and hotel rates are classified in mid-season range. The fall festivals however make September thru November a clear winner. Summer temps rest between the 60s and mid-80s, no wonder this is peak season for New Mexico travelers which take hotel rates to high-season range and make availability tighter. Who can resist those amazing summer festivals though- some of the best in the world come to show art at Folk Art Market, Indian Market, Spanish Market and others. Winter can be chilly with daily highs reaching the upper 40s and evening lows creeping into the 10s.
