Smokey Bear Days: May 3, 4 2019. The 75th birthday celebration of Smokey the Bear will include a parade, free live music, street dancing, vendors marketplace, chainsaw carving contest, fire prevention and educational booths. Smokey himself will be there to promote wild fire prevention awareness as well as celebrate his milestone birthday!
NOTE: Capitan, NM also is home to Ft. Stanton– a U.S. military fort built in what became New Mexico in the United States. Ft Stanton was established to protect settlements along the Rio Bonito in the Apache Wars. Kit Carson, John “Black Jack” Pershing, Billy the Kid, and Buffalo Soldiers of the 9th
Cavalry all lived here. Fort Stanton is located just off the Billy the Kid Scenic Byway (Hwy 380) on Hwy 220 at the Bonito River. The turnoff to Hwy 220 is 4 miles southeast of Capitan on the Byway or 10 miles west of Lincoln, NM.

MONUMENT provides a glimpse into the life and living spaces of the Mogollon people and their culture who inhabited this area from the 1280’s into early 1300’s. Containing 533 acres, it was established on November 16, 1907. The dwellings are located forty-four miles north of Silver City, New Mexico, on Highway 15 on a beautifully scenic drive. This is a great stopping place on route to/from Tucson, Arizona via Santa Fe, NM. Make sure you have good shoes and a water bottle- you won’t be sorry!
