September Indian Summer has past which means Santa Fe October fall travel planning has begun! So, naturally, you are looking for things to do in Santa Fe in October and November. Fall in Santa Fe is the perfect time to visit! Busy summertime crowds are gone, cool temps day and night, with fall New Mexico festivities beginning! Gorgeous fall foliage- every photographer’s dream! Village of El Rito, NM

El Rito Studio Tour – El Rito,NM (60 minutes from Pueblo Bonito b&b inn on 544) October 5 & 6 2019.  Meet more than 25 artists who live and work in this sleepy village that was an early Spanish settlement, located about an hour’s drive northwest of Santa Fe. The annual open studio tour features everything from blacksmithing, fiber arts and pottery to santos and retablos. El Farolito (restaurant) is located here- we highly suggest visiting this little treasure (excellent green chile).

Harvest Festival at El Rancho de las Golondrinas October 5 & 6, 2019 Autumn is a vibrant time to visit Rancho de las Golondrinas? Taste syrup from our burro driven sorghum mill, help make cider by cranking a traditional apple press, and pick a pumpkin from our scarecrow-guarded patch. Children stomp grapes by foot,or make cornhusk dolls or roll a delicious tortilla by hand! Lot’s to do and experience as history comes to life at this long-running and acclaimed event?

Ski Santa Fe Fall Foliage Chair Lift Rides August 31-October 13, 2019  Ski Santa Fe runs their Super Chief Quad chair from 10am to 3pm (weather dependent) with Coffee Bar and La Casa Café open 9am to 4pm for spectacular aspen leave views! Last chairlift ride down is 3:30pm. Come to the Sport Shop for the annual sale- 60% off last years clothes and gear! Select days find live music, beer garden, and activities for the whole family.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta - Things to do in Santa Fe in OctoberInternational Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque’s Balloon Fiesta Park October 5 – 13, 2019  Hundreds of balloons fill the sky at dawn and dusk for nine days, with races, night flights, and more. This is definitely one of the great things to do in Santa Fe in October- true the event occurs in Albuquerque, but staying in Santa Fe with easy walking to the BEST New Mexico restaurants, shops, galleries and near by National Monuments makes way more sense than fighting the crowds (parking, restaurants, highways, hotels, old town, etc) in metropolitan Albuquerque!

Abiquiu Studio Tour Abiquiú, NM (50 miles from Pueblo Bonito b&b inn on US Highway 84/285) October 12 – 14, 2019  70+ artists welcome visitors to home studios in this annual tour. See paintings, weavings, furniture, traditional Spanish Colonial art and more> Explore gorgeous Georgia O’Keeffe country !

Santa Fe Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration at Santa Fe Plaza October 14, 2019  Join in celebration of culture and community! Santa Fe proudly embraces the profound contributions its first peoples brought and continue to bring to the City Different. 23 Tribes, Nations and Pueblos in New Mexico are honored and celebrated on the plaza of historic Santa Fe! Dancing, food, storytellers and more. Is this one of the great things to do in Santa Fe in October? Most definitely!

Santa Fe Independent Film Festival October 16 – 20, 2019  The Santa Fe Independent Film Festival features 5 days of excellence in filmmaking.

Related imageVisit the VALLES CALDERA NATIONAL PRESERVE: The Nation’s Newest National Preserve! About 1.25 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera.  The preserve is known for its huge mountain meadows, abundant wildlife, and meandering streams. The area also preserves the homeland of ancestral native peoples and embraces a rich ranching history. Every Sunday through October 27, 2019 take a HISTORIC CABIN WALK (2-3:30 pm) through the cabins and consider what life was like years ago!  Who built it?  Who lived here? The historic Cabin District of Valles Caldera has been home to many people over the years, some real and some fictional.   OR hike through miles of beautiful preserve in November and on through Winter months! Cross country skiing and snowshoeing can be enjoyed during winter months (Dec, Jan, Feb, March). Galisteo Studio Tour in sleepy Galisteo, NM (20 min drive from Pueblo Bonito b&b Inn) October 12 – 13, 2019   32th anniversary- Galisteo always offers a unique New Mexico Studio Tour Experience! Photography, paintings, pottery, ceramic art, jewelry, bronze sculpture, custom knives and hand crafted traditional arts. Walk from studio to studio along the fall colored lined streets of gold, amber and rust colored cottonwood trees in the bosque- always a breathtaking experience!

Canyon Road Paint & Sculpt Out on Historic Canyon Road October 18-20, 2019 100+ artists creating new works in real time and you can watch as their work comes to life! This special event harkens back to the day when it was a common occurrence to see artists along Canyon Road busy working their craft. Now you’ll find artists working in various genre and media. Free, 10 am–3 pm, A fun must do for Oct 18, 19, 20 visitors!

ANCESTRAL SITES TOUR (Pecos National Historical Park)  October 2019 thru March 2020: Every Friday through Monday. Join a ranger for a guided walk around the main loop trail (1.25 miles) to hear about the crossroads of history and culture that defines this gem of a national park. You’ll also learn about southwest archaeology and ongoing cultural preservation efforts. No reservations necessary. 20 minute drive from Pueblo Bonito b&b inn- Santa Fe, NM.

CIVIL WAR WALKING TOUR (Pecos National Historical Park)  October 2019 thru March 2020: Every Friday and Sunday 1:30 – 3:00 pm. Take a ranger lead walking tour to gain an understanding of the Civil War and the Battle of Glorieta Pass. The tour is about 1 mile in length and travels out a portion of the Battlefield Trail. The trail is a groomed trail and relatively flat with minimal elevation gain. No reservations necessary but we ask you meet the rangers at the main visitor center to start the tour. Please contact the visitor center for more information
