The Orion String Quartet performs Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross, a meditation on Jesus’s words at the Crucifixion.

Walter Braunfels’s two-cello String Quintet, composed in the somber days of World War II, captivates the listener with its dark and sonorous harmonies, while Dvorák’s Piano Trio No. 4, “Dumky,” recalls the Slavic folksongs that were its inspiration.

Beethoven’s Septet is gay and bubbly, powerful and virtuosic. It’s paired with Alexander Goehr’s fantasia on a poem by Theodore Roethke, a Festival co-commission.
